Wrapping Sheet or Swaddle — Which One Do You Need?

Both, but at different stages. This is the question we are asked most often, and the order matters more than the product.

First days: a plain wrapping sheet

A very new baby has spent months in a tight, enclosed space. Wrapping firmly recreates something close to that, and it settles most newborns in the first week. Families here reach for a plain cotton wrapping sheet first. Buy three or four — one is always in the wash.

After the first week: a structured swaddle

A shaped swaddle with velcro or a zip is a better-made product — no loose ends to come undone, and it holds properly while you carry the baby. Our customers use it most once the baby has settled, and especially when leaving the house: a doctor's visit, a family gathering, a photoshoot. Pair it with a woolen cap on cold days out.

Winter swaddles and sleeping bags

Fleece swaddles and hooded sleeping bags with leg openings suit cold nights. They beat loose blankets in the sleeping area, because nothing can ride up over the face. For daytime warmth see blankets and comforters, and for a full first-month list start with the newborn collection.

How to wrap safely

Wrap firmly across the chest and arms, but leave the hips and legs loose enough for the baby to bend them up and out. Avoid wrapping the legs tight and straight — the hip joint is still forming in these weeks. The International Hip Dysplasia Institute explains the correct leg position. Stop swaddling altogether once your baby shows any sign of rolling over.

How many wrapping sheets does a newborn need?

Three to four. They are used constantly in the first month and you need enough that one can be washed and dried while another is in use.

Until what age can a baby be swaddled?

Most parents stop swaddling at around 3 to 4 months. Stop sooner if you see any sign of rolling over, regardless of age.

Can a swaddle be used instead of a blanket at night?

Yes, and for young infants it is the safer option. A wearable swaddle or sleeping bag cannot slip over the face the way a loose blanket can.

Are cotton or fleece swaddles better for Pakistani weather?

Cotton for most of the year, including Karachi winters. Fleece and flannel for Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and northern areas from December to February.
