Buy two, not one
A changing mat gets soiled at the worst possible moment, and in winter it takes a full day to dry. Two means one is always ready. This is the single most common mistake we see on first orders.
Sizes and where each one is used
Small portable mats fold into a bag and are for changes away from home — at a relative's house, in the car, at the doctor.
Extra large sheets stay on the bed. These are what you want under the baby at night, and they are the size that actually protects a mattress rather than just the middle of it.
Velvet top or plain plastic?
Plain PVC sheets are cheaper and wipe clean instantly, but they feel cold against skin and can make a baby sweat underneath. Velvet or terry-topped sheets with a plastic backing are softer to lie on and more comfortable for overnight use. For a newborn sleeping on it every night, the softer top is worth it.
Washing and care
Rinse soiling off under cold water first — hot water sets stains. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. Do not iron the plastic backing and avoid drying a PVC-backed sheet in very harsh direct sun, which makes the backing brittle over time.
